Bug - Not A Bug KoLMafia won't open

Hello KoLmafia people,

Firstly, I really appreciate all the work that you guys & gals do; this has saved me so many hours of time, and I might not be playing KoL if it were not for this.

However, I am having problems all of a sudden, and have not been able to fix it/find a solution. So, here goes (and I hope I haven't missed anything):

(i) I am using KoLmafia...whichever version the EXE link takes me to (5,596 KB in size, if that helps), or version 11.613 for JAR;
(ii) I try to run KoLmafia, as I always do, from where I downloaded it to;
(iii) Either (a) nothing happens (not even a kolmafia process in task manager), or (b) mafia opens, but when you go to log in, it gets "stuck" on various points (e.g. Examining items in Closet, Examining Meat in Storage), will not progress, and will not finish the whole "logging in" thing. Occurrence of (a) and (b) seems to be random.

I have tried running as administrator; uninstalling and re-installing Java (to version 6); rebooting computer; downloading a fresh copy of the EXE file (thought the old one might have been acting up or something, but this hasn't yielded anything).

I can log into KoL via Firefox; I have tried disabling my firewall, but no joy.

No DEBUG logs are being generated.

Help please?

(Please note: I can just about manage a Hello World! program in C++. If I need to do anything technical, please give me step-by-step instructions on how to do so.)
(P.S. I am British. I do not spell things in the same way as one might in America. Apologies to whom this may confuse.)

Still sounds like a broken installation of Java. Make sure -all- versions of Java are cleared out from your machine and reinstalling.

I have also just got this issue as well. I have followed all of the above steps and it still hangs. Will try a complete clean out of Java and try again...

Uninstalled all versions of Java and re-installed them and it still hangs at login. I tried this on more than one account and they all hang at random points. I turned on advance debugging and it will at something like:

I can log on to my account manually but Mafia will not. Any ideas what I can try next?

I am not sure I can go back to the native KoL interface...

Hmm. I just switched on 'Use IP address to connect instead of host name' and it has started working.

I also noticed that today when I try to get to the KOL forums it sometimes times out as well. I wonder if te internet is broken in the UK?

First of all: KoLmafia seems to be working, for the moment. Given I haven't done anything I've not done before, I am confused. If not relieved (.exe version is 11.610, if it's still relevant).

EDIT: Dealt with all three of my characters. Still working. Call it fixed, and thanks for the suggestions.

I did. Would a broken installation of Java account for it suddenly breaking; I didn't mess with Java until after it broke?

How about attaching the debug log?

(Mine didn't generate any)

Mine was like that to begin with. :confused:

And I think the UK suddenly not being connected to the Internet would make the news. ;) Thanks for the idea though

I found yesterday a bit of slowdown and packetloss between UK and US, seemingly in the New York area, according to traceroute. That seemed understandable, given the news. Seemed much better in late evening.

Seemed to affect chat by making it much slower, the main pane often wouldn't appear, and the chat pane seemed to take ages to appear, or failed entirely. Was like this in vanilla, not just mafia, and I also got timeouts etc on KoL forums. Starting mafia would often not work, as mafia wouldn't be able to connect successfully, probably because Mafia does a lot on startup (checking inventory and hangks, etc).

Played merry hell with Mafia, as so much tracking within mafia relies on a reliable character pane. My logs show multiple cases of adventures with the same adventure number, and it was hard to adventure with no knowledge of buffs, etc.

Didn't seem to affect anyone else in clan, but they weren't from the UK.

I'm also not from the USA, some of the sites we used at work were affected. One of my co-workers said that a few major datacentres had been flooded or powered down due to the storms on the east coast of USA. I don't know if that's true, I assume he read it on a news website somewhere, but overseas sites definitely were running slower for us.

Pheonix, the route my traffic was taking yesterday went through New York to Chicago to LA, and then to Pheonix, among other places, if the router names are any indication.
