Hmm. I just switched on 'Use IP address to connect instead of host name' and it has started working. I also noticed that today when I try to get to the KOL forums it sometimes times out as well. I wonder if te internet is broken in the UK?

Uninstalled all versions of Java and re-installed them and it still hangs at login. I tried this on more than one account and they all hang at random points. I turned on advance debugging and it will at something like: Retrieved: http://www.kingdomofloathing.com/familiar.php 10 header fields...

I have also just got this issue as well. I have followed all of the above steps and it still hangs. Will try a complete clean out of Java and try again...
